 Anastacia born Anastacia Lyn Newkirk on September 17, 1973 is an American pop singer and songwriter. Originally a background dancer with a dream of being a professional singer, she entered the MTV reality singing contest, The Cut. As a finalist she garnered fans and the attention of industry executives which landed her a deal with Daylight Records of Sony Music Epic Records. Show more » She has been highly successful in Europe, Oceania, and South Africa but has not had as much success in her native United States. Despite the lack of American success, she has sold over 25 million records worldwide. She is known for her powerful, raspy voice, and she is a dramatic soprano and is famous for her ability to hit high notes in her chest voice. Her vocal sound and style has sometimes led her to be initially mistaken for an African-American singer. She became famous for her trademark glasses often darkly tinted, but had surgery to correct her vision permanently in August 2005. She also made headlines when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. Her nickname is "the little lady with the big voice", she received this title as being only 5'3", people found it very unusual that she had such a powerful strong voice that has been compared to Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin.
