Milow![]() Sometimes in this age when "quiet is the new loud", less is indeed more and singer-songwriter Milow's beautiful debut-album The Bigger Picture fully embodies that approach. Milow is 25-year-old Jonathan Vandenbroeck, but in search for a less Belgian-sounding name, he settled for Milow. Show more » Producer Nigel Powell a gifted drummer & multi-instrumentalist was part of The Unbelievable Truth from 1997 until 2000. If that doesn't ring a bell: that Oxford-based band was fronted by Andy Yorke younger brother of Thom and its debut-album 'Almost Here' is one of Milows "all-time favorites". Powell went to high school with the guys from Radiohead and helped them out with their 1990 recordings when the legendary band were still called 'On A Friday'. "'Building', by Unbelievable Truth, is the first song I ever performed for an audience", Milow remembers. "And eight years later I was able to record my first album with Nigel. Needless to say that meant a lot to me." Much of the sound is reminiscent of John Denver. The album was recorded and mixed in 14 days in the Motormusic-studio in Koningshooikt Belgium. Most tracks on 'The Bigger Picture' were recorded on analog tape, most of the time in one or two takes. "Because we wanted to make a record that sounded like it could've been recorded 30 years ago", Milow says. The entire album builds around Milows voice and acoustic guitar, but sometimes the songs are fleshed out by brooding strings or a little bit of piano and glockenspiel. A couple of songs, like first single 'One Of It', ended up with a more colorful folkrock approach. Sergej Van Bouwel Absynthe Minded, Johannes Verschaeve The Van Jets, and Frederik Sioen are among the guest musicians. Live, Milows band consists of three talented young musicians: Jasper Hautekiet upright bass, Geert Noppe piano, and Frank Van Weddingen drummer, but Milow still sees himself as a solo-artist. "Instead of a future I've got a guitar", he sings in Born In The Eighties. A clever, biting lyric, but in Milow's case, you could suspect that his future and his guitar are one and the same.
