White Stripes![]() The White Stripes is a Grammy-winning American alternative rock duo from Southwest Detroit, Michigan, consisting primarily of songwriter Jack White on guitar, piano, vocals, and Meg White on drums. The group takes its eclectic rock'n'roll sound from delta blues, american punk, country, and folk-rock. They rose to prominence as part of the garage rock revival with their successful albums, White Blood Cells and Elephant. The White Stripes are known for their raw lo-fi sound and simplicity of composition, recording techniques and arrangements. The White Stripes were formed on July 14, 1997 by Jack White born John Anthony Gillis on July 9, 1975 in Detroit, MI and Meg White born Megan Martha White on December 10, 1974 in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. For several years they were a struggling local band, despite touring with established indie rock acts such as Pavement and Sleater-Kinney. During this time, they released singles on various independent record labels because of this, they are often cited by die-hard fans and afficionados as being perhaps the most collectible currently active band with authentic copies of their rare early recordings going into the quadruple-digit range on Internet auction sites such as eBay, including Sympathy For The Record Industry. This is the label on which they would release their first three albums before signing with the major label V2 a subdivision of Virgin in 2002 and re-releasing their third album, White Blood Cells. Show more » Jack has described their eponymous debut album released in 1999, as "...really angry...the most raw, the most powerful, and the most Detroit-sounding record we've made."Their second release, De Stijl 2000, was named after the minimalist Dutch art movement which they cited as a source for the approach to their music and to their image. For a brief period before De Stijl was released, Jack studied fine arts at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, although he never graduated. The album cover features a sample of De Stijl art in the band's signature colours - red, white and black. These colors were chosen to represent the three elements of their music; rhythm, melody and story-telling. Even before forming the band, Jack was focused on a three color scheme. When he worked as an upholsterer, all his tools, his van, and his uniform were white, black, and yellow. The number three also has a significance for this band, not only for their tri-colored uniforms but their three instruments: vocals, guitar and drums - even though Jack plays organ and piano in some songs on the first four albums and some marimba in the fifth, it is always attempted by Jack to be based around the number three supposedly. For live shows, the band does not rehearse or have a set list. Jack improvises frequently and often cuts a song short to jump into another. Jack White often refers to Meg White as his "big sister," even though they are not siblings, as they often portray as a core part of their mythology. Meg is Jack's former wife, but she divorced him in March 2000; despite this they kept the band running. The IMDb credits Jack White for composing soundtrack, writing the lyrics for and arranging the song Christmas Time will Soon be Over for the Civil War movie Cold Mountain 2003. He also performed the song as well as Wayfaring Stranger and Great High Mountain and appears as the character Georgia in the film. The White Stripes appeared as themselves in an episode of "The Simpsons" entitled "Jazzy & the Pussycats" where they performed an homage to their "The Hardest Button to Button" video. They have also appeared together in the film Coffee and Cigarettes 2003 in the segment Jack Shows Meg His Tesla Coil.
